folk music. and puffing the magic dragon. ONLY NOT. YOU POTHEADS.
so how tired are you all of seeing my bangs? me too. well, no, i still love them, i’m just tired of seeing them on the blahg. blah. so anyway, on to something a tiny bit more depressing than a new haircut. sorry. keep reading if you’re a sentimental idiot like me.
when mj died, and everyone was all “oh my gosh, Michael Jackson was such a pivotal point of my childhood, i remember this about this song and this about this song and…” i was kinda meh. i love some of his songs, don’t get me wrong, but when he was crazy popular, i wasn’t really listening to that sort of music. i was listening to what my parents listened to.
folk music.
of the peter, paul, and mary variety.
because my dad met my mom, fell in love, and gave up his love for dope smokin’ music.
except when he was singing his tiny daughter to sleep.
but that’s a whole ‘nother blog post.
anyway. i digress. as usual.
on wednesday, mary travers of peter, paul (who’s given name was actually noel, but maybe peter, noel and mary didn’t sound as good?), and mary passed away after a lengthy battle with leukemia. this isn’t anything like michael jackson dying (especially considering that he was the king of pop. i mean COME ON.) but it strikes a chord (insert band geek face) much more with me. i can distinctly remember bouncing around in my dad’s old red pickup belting out EVERY WORD (and i mean every. word.) to Stewball (which is about a racehorse? and a poor boy in trouble? who didn’t bet on the racehorse? or something?). and Puff the Magic Dragon (WHICH IS NOT ABOUT SMOKING WEED YOU POT HEADS). in fact, a couple summers ago, while on the great family vaycay, we popped that tape in and sang along to puff the magic dragon and i started crying. which, it seems, i always do when they get to the part about jackie paper growing up. i just feel so bad for that poor damn friendless dragon. but my favorite as i’ve gotten older (because you can bet your ass i’ve still got that tape — sorry, mom, if you’ve been looking for it! : ) ) has become leavin’ on a jet plane. oh, leavin’ on a jet plane. john denver wrote one hell of a song with that one, but no one sings it like mary travers.

speaking of leavin’ on a jet plane — i’m headed to TX at the end of this week to hang out with this kid for a few days, but guess what? i am totally hooking you up with some amazing 20sb guest bloggers. ash from not a hitching post, rach from confessions of a jersey girl, courtney from ’til the river runs dry, wishy from your wishcake, and last but definitely never least (and really, not even last in this case. she’s on the 25th), jill from the pilgrim congress. so. i know *I* never blog, but they will! yay! so look forward to that starting Thursday!

Have a safe trip!
I am so excited!
Also? I frigging LOVE Peter, Paul, and Mary! I was so sad to hear that Mary had passed. :(
